Practical Ideas for Aligning ERM and Strategy

Strategy and ERM should be natural partners in developing the direction for an insurer. And at some insurers, they do work well together. This session will address those situations where the collaboration needs to be improved significantly. Discussion will focus on practical suggestions collected from ERM practitioners and will include examples of activities that have been successful in accomplishing true collaboration.

Taking ERM to the Next Level—Operationalizing Risk Appetite and Risk Tolerances as Part of ERM

This session will help participants understand how to take ERM to the next level through the operationalization of risk appetite and risk tolerance statements. The session is designed to help participants understand how to establish the broad levels of risks management that the board wishes to take. At the same time, the session will help participants set tollgates or limits around these broad boundaries and risks and how escalation protocols should work if established limits are breached.

This session will focus on the key current and emerging risks faced by Workers Compensation carriers and how leading insurers are leveraging practical ERM tools and modeling approaches to effectively manage top risks, enhance financial outcomes, and better future-proof their organizations.  This session will also present the strategic challenges posed by innovation and technological changes impacting the insurance industry as well as modeling approaches and risk management solutions for earthquake, terrorism, industrial accident and pandemic risks impacting WC.

ERM Roundtable—A Conversation between ERM Leaders from AASCIF Organizations to Share ERM Best Practices and Leverage the Expertise of Fellow Members

This session is designed to facilitate open dialogue among ERM leaders to share ERM best practices and leverage the expertise of fellow AASCIF organizations. The ERM Committee will share the results from the recent ERM survey and will use content from the survey to guide the conversation. Examples of topics likely to be discussed include:  frameworks and tools used to facilitate ERM, linking ERM with planning and strategy, articulating risk appetite and tolerances across the organization, and promoting a culture of risk awareness to encourage disciplined and informed risk taking. Attendees are encouraged to contribute to the conversation by asking questions and providing valuable input.
