Getting Claimants Well: Focusing on the non-work-related issues that lead to poor outcomes
Workers compensation reliably leads to worse health outcomes when compared to the same health issues treated outside of workers’ compensation. One apparent reason is the manner in which the system forces an assumption of injury onto claims. Scientific findings consistently indicate that the assumption of injury is often incorrect, including the biggest cost-driver in workers compensation – back pain. The false assumption of injury leads to misdirected health care, and consequently, poor outcomes. Another relevant issue is workers compensation’s encouragement of withdraw from work, which is reliably harmful for health. This presentation will review scientific findings regarding these issues, and other aspects of workers compensation, which lead to poor health outcomes. Additionally, the presentation will offer credible approaches to addressing troubling factors, in the hope of facilitating better outcomes for injured workers.
